Mother's Day

With Mother's Day approaching, I figured I would share what I did last year and plan on doing again this year. I had my students make coasters for their mom (or grandma) using bathroom tile. Only 17 cents each at Home Depot! The kids decorated using permanent marker then I sprayed it with acrylic spray to seal it. On the back I hot glued felt so that it doesn't scratch the surface. I had many moms go out of their way to tell me it was a wonderful project!

I am also going to try something new this year. It's called breakfast in a bag. I'm going to pick up white lunch bags for the kids to decorate and glue this poem to the outside of the bag. Inside the bag will be a package of oatmeal, a tea bag, granola bar, and a banana. Also included in the bag will be a Mother's Day card and the above coaster. Another cute idea would be to put the breakfast items in a mug, but that would be a pricey project.

So great! Someone donated a bunch of tiles to our school so I'll be using them for a mother's day gift too. I love the breakfast in bed. I am so doing this! Thanks for sharing!

Yours look nice, but do you have apic from the kids? I normally don't let the kids touch my sharpies is that what you had them use?

I don't have pics from the kids, BUT I taught kindergarten last year and they came out sooo cute. I had this project be a "center" so I had 4 kids at a time come work with me. I had no issues with the Sharpies.

Thanks for sharing a great idea-I've already bought the permanent markers and the acrylic spray! :-)

One question: did you use tiles that already had glaze on them? I was wondering if there was any smearing, but then the non-glazed ones would probably bleed too much, huh?

Thanks for any information!

They were the glossy ones and the kids didn't seem to have any problems.

Wow...I did a sample of this project to show my kiddos and can I just say, easiest project EVER! Thanks SO much for the inspiration! I bought my tiles at Home Depot for 14 cents each. Spent $7 to get enough for 2 classrooms. Felt was cheap and the other materials will last forever; not just for this project.

SUPER wonderful idea-thanks again so much for sharing!

Great idea! However, I went to AC Moore and bought clear acrylic sealer and my markers ink smeared! Can you share the acrylic sealer you used!?!

Thanks so much :)

It's called Folk Art acrylic spray. I got it at Michaels and I didn't have any problems with smearing.

This is really cute! I picked up my tiles this weekend! Would you be able to update the poem? without the year, so it can be used from year to year?

Thanks!
