I got my idea for this from Ms. M. I made up an antonym song that goes to the tune of "The Ants Go Marching" (at least I think I made it up. I didn't find it online.. I just started singing it in the shower one morning and went with it!). It went a little like this:
The antonyms go marching one by one hurrah, hurrah.
The antonyms go marching one by one hurrah, hurrah.
::insert 4 sets of antonyms. The kids came up with them::
clean and dirty
high and low
good and bad
yes and no
And they all go marching down to the ground
BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM!
Then repeat with two by two, etc. with 4 different antonyms.
My kids totally ATE this up.
My kids totally ATE this up.
Then they traced their feet, cut it out, and wrote their antonyms and drew a picture.
Oh this is so cute! Their drawings are darling. I will have to teach my students your song. They LOVE to sing. Sometimes they drive me nuts. Thanks for the shout out. :)

Your blog is enchanting! Love the fairytale kids sitting on the castle walls. I like your antonyms activity too!

I stinkin' LOVE this idea. My class loves singing and so do I! The information sticks with them so much better after we sing a little song about it. I have a small keyboard in my classroom, so I quick found some (easy) sheet music on google. It included this ending... "and they all go marching down, to the ground, to get out, of the rain, boom boom boom". I'm going to change it to... "and they all go marching down, with the word, that means the, opp-o-site, boom, boom, boom!" I was psyched that I managed to fit in the defintion of antonym, so I thought I'd share!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the idea. I can't wait to do this activity with my class. I'm thinking of going with the "ant" theme and writing the antonyms on little ant cut-outs. I'll let you know how it turns out! :)

Great idea, thanks Laura!
ReplyDeleteI originally was going to do ants, but I have ants on my door and I didn't want to be overly tacky ;)
Can't wait to see it!
What did you use to make the ants on your door? I'm thinking of doing a bunch of circle die-cuts and having them put them together and add legs, antennae...but maybe there is an easier way.
ReplyDeleteI'm way excited about this. :)
You can see the picture of the ants here.. basically it's what you are thinking ;)
